Profile
Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal was identified as the nodal centre for the energy theme under the Indo-UK RECs project in 1994 by the Government of India. The Energy Centre at MANIT was formally inaugurated by the former President of India, late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, on 12 July 1997. With a dedicated built-up area of about 3000 sq. m., the Centre established nine specialized laboratories in areas such as energy conservation, energy audit, solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies, wind energy, and heat transfer systems.
Many associated faculty members received extensive training in advanced areas of energy at leading British universities and industries through the Indo-UK RECs collaboration. In 2004, Centre started postgraduate in Energy and doctoral programs, and in 2007 it became the pioneer in India to launch a full-fledged undergraduate program in Energy Engineering with an intake of 40 students.
Over the years, the centre has successfully undertaken and completed numerous research and consultancy projects, contributing to the national energy agenda. Later centre started two postgraduate programs: M.Tech. in Renewable Energy and M.Tech. in Energy Systems Management. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, has recognized the centre for the award of postgraduate fellowships at both M.Tech. and Ph.D. levels.
Building on this strong foundation, the Department of Energy Science and Engineering (ESE) was formally established in 2025 and launched two new programs: B.Tech in Energy and Electric Vehicles Engineering with an intake of 30 and M.Sc in Energy Economics and Management with an intake of 12.
Objectives of the Department
- To develop sustainable infrastructure and provide solutions to pressing challenges in energy security.
- To integrate the expertise of scientists and engineers working across diverse domains of renewable and sustainable energy.
- To deliver quality education through undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and short-term training programs, thereby creating skilled manpower for industry, academia, and public sectors.
- To advance grassroots-level research, innovation, and technology deployment in the fields of energy, environment and EV Technologies.
- To establish close collaborations with industry and leading national and international academic institutions, fostering cutting-edge research and innovation.
- To realize the vision of a “Green Campus” by adopting renewable energy and energy-efficient practices, and to contribute significantly towards making India a global leader in sustainable energy.
Vision
- To be a globally recognized Department of Energy Science and Engineering, excelling in education, research, and innovation, and serving as a premier resource for advancing sustainable energy solutions for India and the world.
Mission
- To nurture future-ready, highly qualified, and ethical professionals through specialized education, research, and training in renewable energy, energy economics, and EV technologies.
- To lead in the development, demonstration, and dissemination of sustainable energy technologies, fostering awareness among academia, industry, policymakers, and society at large.
- To innovate and develop eco-friendly, cost-effective, and scalable technologies that contribute to national and global energy security.
- To collaborate with industry, government agencies, and international institutions for knowledge exchange and commercialization of research outcomes.
- To enhance societal well-being by promoting conservation of natural resources, reducing carbon footprints, and driving socio-economic growth through sustainable practices.
- To transform MANIT into a model Green Campus and act as a catalyst for propagating sustainable campus frameworks across India.

The thrust given by the Govt. of India under National Action Plan on Climate Change and Jawahar Lal Nehru National Solar Mission has suddenly created the need to train large human resource in the field of new and renewable energy especially with expertise in solar energy. M.Tech in renewable energy is designed to equip graduates and working professionals with a broad training understanding of energy production, delivery, consumption, efficiency, economics, policy, regulation and environmental impact. These are considered in context of sustainable renewable energy supply with emphasis on solar energy systems.

Project Title:
“Development and Field Testing of Solar-Integrated Portable Mobile Milk Chiller with Latent Storage System (PMC-LSS)”
Sanction Order No.: ANRF/IRG/2024/000621/ENS
Date of Sanction: 05 March 2025
Funding Agency: Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India
Total Funded Amount: ₹34.75 Lakhs
Project Duration: 3 Years
Principal Investigator (PI):
Dr. Ravindra D. Jilte, Associate Professor, Energy Centre, MANIT Bhopal
Project Overview:
The project aims to develop and test an innovative solar-integrated, portable milk chiller equipped with a latent heat energy storage system, addressing the critical challenge of milk spoilage in rural and off-grid regions. By combining solar technology with thermal storage, this portable solution will ensure milk cooling at the source — enhancing dairy supply chain reliability, reducing post-harvest losses, and empowering smallholder farmers.
